Traipsing around Hong Kong: Part 3

For my final day in Hong Kong, we explored the markets in Mongkok and of course hunt down more food. After stuffing ourselves with breakfast at Tim Ho Wan, we headed towards Mongkok to see the famous markets in the area. Public transportation is just so easy here, impressive how taking the MTR pretty much gets you everywhere! Be sure to get an Octopus card for easier travels.

The plan: To finish 4 markets in 3 hours. We ended finishing our market tour in over an hour though.

Market 1: Clothes and mobile phone cases
Didn't spend too much time here, since every stall looked like a replica of the one before. Also, I wasn't exactly looking to stock my wardrobe with colour blocking outfits just yet :P Fun to walk about though, with the street being mostly filled with locals going about their daily routine.

Market 2: Flower Market
Admittedly not the world's biggest flower enthusiast. However, word on the interwebz was that the Flower Market was a must-visit. I understood why when we got there. Rows of shops decked out with vibrant coloured flowers and plants of every sort. I call this place 'happy street' (must have been all that colours) and ended up taking countless photos, much to the annoyance of the shop owners.

Market 3: Bird Market
Right at the end of Flower Market Road, you'll find the famous Bird Market. The entrance looked like an entry to an enticing garden.

Pretty bird cages with equally pretty birds in them to greet you as you walk in.
Some friends that I met at the Bird Market..

Some friends we're more fascinating than others. Juicy crickets anyone?

Market 4: Fish Market
As the name suggests, you'll find all kinds of fishies up for sale here. Didn't take pics because we were out of there in a jiffy. Nothing unusual displayed that you couldn't find back home.

Not sure how the conversation on cat cafes started while we were at the fish market, but it lead to us finding a cat cafe with the help of trusty Foursquare. I always wanted to experience what a place that allowed you to dine in the presence of cats was like, so off we went.
If you look really hard, you might spot a cat (or two).
Kitty munchies for humans
To be honest, the entire experience was rather disappointing. I kinda thought the cats would surround us and be all friendly and cute - which is essentially what you think you're paying for. Sadly, they were asleep for the most part and didn't seem too enthusiastic to greet guests that came in. Felt more like a cat zoo because all we did was stare at the cats with false hope that they might come sit with us.

Next on the agenda was to hunt for what was apparently Hong Kong's best waffles. After a disappointing visit to Cameo's Kitchen the day before because it was closed, we were determined to get our waffle fix. Yayy for being open this time!

It was worth the second attempt to visit. The waffles were eggy and soft. Sandwiched with a condensed milk filling - probably too rich and sweet to finish an entire waffle by yourself though, for me at least. I'd be a regular at Cameo's if I was living in HK, that's for sure :)

Ended the day by going for the Light Show. Getting there involved taking a ferry to Victoria Harbour, which was fun. Views of the buildings were so pretty at night too.
Ferry ride
The Light Show was nothing short of amazing. Crazy how the lights on the buildings were in perfect sync and lit up according to the background music played across the island at Victoria Harbour. The spectacle lasted for about 20 mins and I savoured every single second of it. Couldn't ask for a more perfect ending to my trip.
And so this concludes my Hong Kong adventures for this time. This isn't goodbye land of dim sum and awesome waffles, I'm definitely coming back for seconds :)
